The moment I understood what vision actually is

I remember the exact moment.

We were working out how to position Bowie on the Earthling cover. We had a cutout — a hand-coloured figure of him in the now iconic Union Jack coat, his bright ginger hair unmistakable. I threw it onto the table.

It landed face down. Back to front.

Bowie with his back to us.

We both stopped talking. Just looked at it. Then looked at each other.

In that silence — maybe three seconds, maybe ten — everything shifted.

Bowie had always faced the camera on his album covers. Always. It was one of those unspoken rules so deeply embedded nobody had ever thought to question it. The record company would hate this. It made no logical sense.

But we both knew. Not thought. Not decided. Knew.

His back turned — that coat, that field, that refusal to face the world on the world’s terms — was the album. It was everything the music was trying to say. It arrived not through cleverness or strategy or a forced creative process.

It arrived through a cutout landing wrong on a table.

Or rather — landing exactly right.

What it taught me — what I have never forgotten — is this:

The vision knows. Your only job is to stay open enough, present enough, undefended enough — to recognise it when it arrives. Even when it looks like a mistake. Especially then.

This is what I now teach.

Not how to be more creative. Not how to think bigger. Not a framework you could find anywhere else.

I guide you to be fully present to what is already trying to arrive through you — to nurture it, to rise to its calling, and only then, when you have the most potent knowing, to bring it powerfully into the world.

Because a true vision does not come from information. It comes from a place that sits beyond thought — and it can only arrive fully when you are open to its highest expression.
